Ascent is a non-profit, spiritual humanist community that facilitates book discussions centered on wisdom literature. We believe that meeting in a respectful group setting to discuss wisdom texts can accelerate learning, provide friendship, and incorporate wisdom more holistically into our lives.

We were organized during the COVID-19 pandemic by a group of diverse Mormons who were experiencing a spiritual transition. We met in the mountains to listen and share spiritual practices that were affirming to us outside of orthodox religious practice. Finding guidance in wisdom literature as we enjoyed an empathetic group of new friends felt right to us. And that’s how Ascent was born.

We appreciate the gift of a well-written book. Wisdom literature is often the culmination of decades of difficult and even painful life experiences.

The Chinese philosopher, Confucius, once observed three ways to acquire the necessary wisdom you need for life. He said, “By three methods we may learn wisdom: first, by reflection, which is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third, by experience, which is the bitterest.”

Reading and discussing texts can accelerate these methods for learning. And with so many books to pick from and so little time, we are careful to curate books that are highly revered and have influenced society for good.

We believe the simple act of meeting in community to discuss some of the world’s most powerful wisdom can play an important part of helping people learn these critical lessons evolve and influence the global community in its ongoing ascent.
